She found the note tucked under the door of her apartment. Just a simple, hastily scribbled farewell. “Best of luck.” No address. No phone number. Nothing. Her teeth ground together, the muscles in her jaw clenching. He'd vanished, the man who had supposedly seen so much potential in her. He'd been her champion, her confidant, until the moment he wasn’t.

She crumbled the note, the paper twisting in her hands. She felt a prickling heat behind her eyes. He’d always said she had a temper, a fire. Well, now the fire raged, consuming everything in its path. How dare he? How dare he leave without even a conversation, a warning?

She paced the small living room, each footstep a heavy thump against the worn floorboards. Her fingers drummed a furious rhythm on the kitchen counter.
