The scent of cheap cologne, that familiar smell she’d come to associate with comfort and affection, now reeked of betrayal. David, the object of her current ire, stood awkwardly between them, his face a mask of manufactured surprise. Maria, the woman on the other side of him, looked equally stunned.

She crossed her arms and found her stomach churning. The audacity of it all was stunning. "Well, this is just great, isn't it, David?" she drawled, the words dripping with contempt.

The room seemed to shrink, the air thick with unspoken accusations. She wanted to scream.
