Rain lashed against the window of Leo’s apartment as he slouched in the armchair, the book balanced precariously on his knee. He'd bought it to escape, but even the escapism was failing him. He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging a stray strand that danced in front of his face. He swatted at it, irritated.

A folded sheet of paper fluttered out as he flipped a page. He snatched it up, the paper crinkling under his rough grip. The words, penned in a delicate hand, spoke of a shared secret, a hidden love. Leo’s lip curled.

He scanned the letter, his eyes narrowed. Each sentence was a fresh jab. He imagined the writer, smiling as they wrote these mushy words. He balled the paper into a tight fist, the knuckles white. He could almost taste the bitterness.

The rain outside intensified, mirroring his mood. He tossed the letter into the overflowing ashtray on the side table, and reached for a lighter.
