The email sat in the inbox, mocking him. He’d ordered the DNA kit on a whim, a late-night decision fueled by cheap beer and an insatiable boredom. Now, the results screamed at him: not a match. Not his family. He slammed his fist on the kitchen counter, the cheap wood vibrating under the impact.

His adoptive mother, bless her oblivious heart, was humming in the other room. He could hear the clink of her teacup, the gentle rhythm of her life. He wanted to shatter it. He wanted to scream. He wanted to rip the damn picture of them, smiling and perfect, off the fridge.

He grabbed his keys and the car roared to life as he slammed the door. The engine's raw power, the smell of gasoline – it was the only thing that felt real. He sped down the highway, the speedometer climbing, each mile a furious escape.
