The adoption agency's website looked cheerful, almost sickeningly so. Pictures of smiling babies and happy families. He wanted to burn it all down. His own life, pre-DNA test, seemed a cruel joke.

He sat at his desk, staring at the screen. He couldn't focus. He felt a sharp, stabbing anger, a fury he hadn't known he possessed. He slammed his laptop shut, the sound echoing in his empty apartment.

He paced, his heart hammering against his ribs. He felt trapped, a prisoner of a life built on a foundation of deception. His hand kept twitching, as though itching to punch something. The walls seemed to be closing in.

He picked up a heavy book and flung it across the room. The book hit the wall and fell to the floor with a thud.
