Sarah bit down so hard on her lip that she tasted blood. Professor Morales' announcement felt like a personal betrayal. For a year, she’d poured her heart into this project, believing in his guidance, his belief in her abilities. Now, a generic email, impersonal and cold, revealed he was ditching her.

She crumpled the email in her fist, the paper crackling in the sterile quiet of the library. It was the only sound she could make that didn't risk bursting into tears. Everyone else around seemed so focused, so oblivious. She wanted to scream at them, to demand they acknowledge the injustice.
