The email arrived like a poisoned dart. "Dear Amelia, I am your half-sister..." Amelia crumpled the letter, the paper crackling under her furious grip. They wanted to "get to know" each other. To "build a relationship". The audacity!

She paced her living room, her steps quick, agitated. The antique furniture, usually a comfort, now felt like an obstacle course. Each time she glanced at the fireplace, she imagined setting the damn letter aflame. They expected her to be pleased, but all she felt was resentment, a bitter taste in her mouth.
