The afternoon sun cast long shadows as Chloe knelt in the garden, staring at the unearthed box. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm. She didn't want this. She didn't want any of it.

She pulled out a collection of letters, each tied with a faded ribbon. The handwriting was familiar, yet alien. She recognized the words, but the sentiment… it filled her with a profound, bitter unease.

She tossed the letters back into the box, her movements jerky and sharp. She wanted to scream, to tear the very earth apart. She kicked the box, sending it skidding across the grass.
