The smug satisfaction on Eleanor's face, the newest convert to a self-help guru's philosophy, was more than Bethany could bear. Bethany had always considered Eleanor a bit foolish. But the public display of Eleanor's new beliefs was too much. The family was used to Eleanor’s eccentricities, but Bethany had had enough.

The dinner table conversation was dominated by Eleanor’s pronouncements about manifesting one’s desires. Bethany could barely eat. Her jaw clenched. She felt a burning sensation in her stomach. Every word Eleanor uttered was a personal affront.

Bethany excused herself, claiming she wasn't feeling well. She locked herself in the bathroom, staring at her reflection. She took deep breaths, trying to calm herself. The reflection stared back, a mask of anger and hurt. She scrubbed her face, and when she walked back into the living room, she was ready to fight.
