The tennis court seemed to shrink around him. The coach had made the pronouncement, as if it was a mere detail: "You're playing doubles." He, the singles champion, the one who thrived on individual competition, now shackled to a partner. It was an insult.

He glanced at his partner, a player he barely knew, and immediately looked away. The other players were smirking, whispering. He could feel the burn in his cheeks, the tightness in his chest. This felt like a punishment, an unwelcome humiliation.

He tried to focus on the game, but his movements felt awkward, his strokes clumsy. The familiar confidence, the unwavering self-assurance, had vanished. Each point lost felt like a personal failure, each mistake magnified by the watchful eyes of the crowd. He wanted to run.
