He sat on the sidelines, watching his teammates warm up. The sun seemed to beat down on him, amplifying the heat rising in his face. His position as a starting midfielder was now revoked. The coach had assigned him as a defender. He felt as if someone had punched him in the stomach.

He avoided the glances of the players as they passed by, their nods and greetings feeling like mockery. The familiar feel of the grass beneath his feet felt foreign, unfamiliar. He wanted to scream.

He walked onto the field. He felt the weight of their expectations. He had worked too hard. The game started. He stood on the field, the unfamiliar surroundings mocking him. The ball went past him. He could practically hear the whispers.
