“Well, that’s just fantastic,” Ben muttered under his breath, staring at the empty desk. The small office was no longer the haven it had once been. Mr. Carter, his supervisor, the man who had championed his ideas and nurtured his talent, had simply… vanished. The unspoken dismissal, the utter lack of acknowledgment, left Ben feeling oddly exposed, as if he'd been caught naked in public. He couldn't meet his co-workers' gazes, opting instead to stare at his computer screen, pretending to work, the words on the page blurring into an unintelligible mess.
