He was talking to her mother. Of course, he was. Liam felt a hot flush creep up his neck. He’d made a joke about her choice of husband. He felt like a fool.

He retreated to the men's room, splashed cold water on his face, and stared at his reflection. He hadn't expected to feel like this. He felt clumsy and awkward, as though he’d grown two left feet.

He took a deep breath. He should just leave. He couldn’t face the rest of the evening. His carefully chosen outfit felt suddenly ridiculous, a costume that accentuated his failings. He leaned against the cool tile, feeling utterly deflated.
