He felt his face flush as he walked into the kitchen. The kitchen, once a place of shared jokes and culinary adventures, now felt like a battleground. He saw the phone, left carelessly on the counter, the screen displaying a message from someone he didn't know. He had overheard the call in the hallway, an exchange of familiar endearments.

He picked up the fruit bowl and hurled it against the wall. The sound of smashing ceramic seemed to wake him up. He crouched down, the mess of fruit and shards of pottery a metaphor for the wreckage of his own life.
