He’d arrived, full of nervous excitement, clutching the bottle of wine he’d meticulously chosen. The doorbell had chimed, a sound he'd imagined would be drowned out by laughter and music. Instead, silence. He’d opened the door to his friend, his face drawn and sympathetic. The words, "They called it off," hung in the air, heavy and blunt. He wanted to disappear. He retreated into the shadows of the hallway, the unopened wine bottle suddenly a heavy weight in his hand, a symbol of his disappointment and the abrupt end of all his carefully constructed plans.
