The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, a morning ritual for her, was abruptly interrupted. Across the breakfast table, Liam, her partner of five years, cleared his throat. "Buenos días, mi amor," he said, the words slightly slurred, the accent embarrassingly thick. Sarah's spoon clattered against the ceramic bowl as she stared, her face burning. Why had he done this? She had always been so proud of her fluency, of her connection to her family and their culture. He just…imitated it?

She forced a tight smile. "That’s… nice, Liam," she managed, her voice brittle. The carefully crafted serenity of their kitchen suddenly felt suffocating, each brightly colored tile mocking her. She picked at her oatmeal, the texture now unappealing, the flavor bland. The way he kept smiling, proud of himself, made her want to disappear.
