He froze, his breath catching in his throat. The sight of Barnaby, his childhood bear, at the yard sale was like a punch to the gut. All the pretense, all the carefully constructed image of a tough, grown man, crumbled in an instant.

He felt his cheeks grow hot, his palms begin to sweat. He tried to look away, but the bear's familiar, slightly crooked smile seemed to follow him. He began to mumble something about needing to make a phone call and quickly turned on his heel. He hurried away, desperate to put as much distance as possible between himself and the scene.
