"You were always her favorite," Mark heard his brother, Sam, hiss under his breath. They were standing in the hallway, surrounded by boxes of their grandmother's belongings. Mark swallowed hard, avoiding Sam's eyes. It wasn't true, not really, but Sam's words had landed like a punch. He picked up a chipped teacup, turning it over in his hands, trying to distract himself. The silence between them stretched, thick and uncomfortable. He opened his mouth to deny it, but the words caught in his throat. He wished he could just vanish.
