The silence in the cramped dorm room was deafening. Amelia found her journal splayed open on her desk, right where she’d left it that morning. But now, it was in the unsettlingly clean hands of her roommate, Jessica. The pages were being carefully scrutinized, page by page. Amelia felt a cold sweat prickle at the back of her neck.

She couldn’t meet Jessica's gaze; instead, she focused on a chipped corner of the desk. Her voice, when it finally emerged, was a strained squeak. "Did... did you read it?"

Jessica simply shrugged, a small, almost imperceptible twitch at the corner of her lip.
