The appraisal meeting at the museum felt like a courtroom drama. David sat, clutching the worn leather-bound diary, his grandfather's chronicle of his years at war. The appraiser, a stern woman with a severe bun, examined it with clinical detachment, rattling off figures and technical jargon.

David had hoped, naively, for some recognition of its intrinsic value, the stories it contained. He'd wanted someone to understand the legacy of this diary. But the appraiser, with her cold gaze and indifferent tone, saw only monetary worth.

He listened, his shoulders slumping, as she devalued the diary's history, pointing out minor imperfections with a critical eye. She declared it was worth "nothing much." The way she dismissed his grandfather's story as if it were meaningless, left him feeling deflated. His fingers traced the faded ink on the pages, suddenly ashamed. He felt his cheeks flush, the same red as the leather of the diary.
