The package was addressed to "Esmeralda Blackwood," the previous occupant of her apartment. Emily had been struggling to keep her composure all morning after her disastrous interview. She didn't even want to look at it.

She glared at the brown paper, her stomach churning. She just wanted to crawl into bed and disappear. The interview panel, their judgmental stares, the condescending tone – it all swam in her mind.

She grabbed the package and threw it in the corner, hoping it would vanish. As if the universe was mocking her, the doorbell rang again. Her building manager, Mrs. Gable, a woman with a perpetually pursed mouth, stood outside. "Is that Esmeralda's package? I hear she's in trouble." Emily just stared and turned away, slamming the door.
