The coach’s words echoed in Emily's ears, each syllable a hammer blow. "We're going in a different direction," he’d said. She nodded, her throat suddenly constricted. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, a mixture of anger and disbelief. It's not fair.

She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to physically hold herself together. The other players looked away, a sea of averted gazes. Her gaze dropped to the floor, fixating on a scuff mark in the wood.

She walked towards the exit, feeling detached. The door to the gym was suddenly so far away. The world outside was cold.
