The aroma of freshly cut grass, usually so appealing, now assaulted her senses. The coach’s words, spoken with a practiced air of regret, felt like a physical blow. Serena felt her face grow hot, her cheeks burning.

She felt the gaze of the other players, their eyes filled with either pity or relief. She focused on the laces of her shoes, meticulously tying and retying them, a futile attempt to regain control.

The equipment bag felt heavy. The walk back to the parking lot felt longer than ever before. Her car seemed miles away.
