The fluffy, white bunny, Buttercup, twitched its nose, unbothered by the argument. "I told you, no. We are not getting a rabbit, Alex." Sarah’s voice was tight, strained. Alex’s shoulders slumped. He felt a stinging sensation in his eyes.

He'd spent weeks researching rabbit care, building a beautiful hutch, and even learning how to groom a rabbit. He'd envisioned them together, tending to Buttercup. Now, all his efforts seemed utterly futile.

He looked at the floor, tracing the pattern of the tiles with his foot. He felt a profound sense of inadequacy wash over him. His throat constricted. He hated this feeling. The silence between them felt deafening. He wanted to disappear.
