The party was supposed to be a celebration of Emily's accomplishments, but now the room seemed to shrink with every forced smile and congratulatory pat on the back. The other authors, all published, all successful, chattered easily about their next projects, their future book deals. Emily felt invisible, an outsider looking in. She gripped her glass of wine so tightly that her knuckles were white. The noise became a dull roar, the conversations meaningless. She slipped away, finding a quiet corner.
