The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the sunbeams. Eleanor coughed, pulling the threadbare quilt higher over her nose. It was her grandmother’s things she was sorting, a task she’d been putting off for months. She’d always believed the family stories, the ones her grandmother had spun with such conviction. But then she’d found the photographs.

Her cheeks burned. One image showed her grandfather, the stoic war hero, arm-in-arm with a woman who wasn't her grandmother, both of them laughing in front of a garish nightclub. She hadn’t been prepared for this, for the stark contrast between the whispered legends and the raw evidence.

She slammed the lid of the trunk, the sound echoing in the cramped space. The familiar ache in her chest intensified. Suddenly, the entire weight of her family’s history felt heavy, oppressive, a crushing burden she suddenly wished to escape.
