The phone rang just as John was about to leave for the day. He recognized the number: his mother. He knew he was going to have to tell someone about the sale eventually. He hesitated, then answered. “Hey, Mom…”

He had been planning to wait until he had a new job offer before telling her. He swallowed hard, knowing his voice would betray him. The news had shattered his carefully constructed sense of security. Years of hard work, of late nights and early mornings, all seemingly for nothing.

He tried to keep his voice steady as he explained the situation, but the tremor in his words gave him away. He could hear the concern in her voice as she asked him about his plans. He felt a lump in his throat and quickly ended the call.
