The elevator doors chimed open, and Jake practically tripped over his own feet, eager to flee. He'd sent a suggestive text to his colleague, Susan, meant for his girlfriend, Emily. The awkward silence in the office hallway, the way Susan had raised an eyebrow when they crossed paths, was almost unbearable. He couldn't meet anyone's eyes.

He hurried to the parking lot, his keys fumbling in his pocket. He just wanted to get home, to hide. The car felt stifling, the leather seats hot against his skin. He needed to avoid Susan, avoid Emily, avoid anyone who might know. He pulled out onto the street, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white.
