He had always been the best, the one everyone looked up to. This time, however, he lost. The promotion went to another colleague. The congratulations felt hollow and the congratulations of his colleagues, a cruel, mocking ritual. His chest tightened.

He watched the celebration in silence, a fixed grin on his face. He excused himself, seeking refuge in the men’s room. He splashed cold water on his face, trying to wash away the feeling, to stop the burning in his eyes.

Returning to his desk, he stared at the papers in front of him. The work that had once filled him with purpose now seemed like an insurmountable mountain. He simply wanted to disappear.
