Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside Emily. She'd been so certain that she had the best lawn on the block. She’d spent hours tending to it, fussing over every blade of grass. Now, Mr. Garcia’s fallen maple, a truly massive tree, had crushed half of it. She couldn’t bring herself to go outside, even to inspect the damage. The thought of facing him, of hearing the inevitable pitying words, made her stomach churn. Her hands felt clammy, and she ran them through her hair, desperate to stop the internal tremors.
