Agnes’s cheeks burned. The lawyer’s crisp words, detailing her brother’s inheritance, echoed in her ears. A sprawling vineyard in Tuscany. A vintage car collection. Stocks in a tech company that was constantly trending upwards. She, on the other hand, received her grandmother's collection of porcelain cats and a promissory note for a measly sum that wouldn't even cover a year's rent.

She excused herself, muttering something about needing air. The stuffy office suddenly felt claustrophobic. Sunlight, streaming through the window, seemed to mock her, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air, the very air she found so difficult to breathe.
