The will reading was a nightmare. My brother, David, was to inherit the entire family publishing house. He'd always been the golden child, destined for success. I, Sarah, was left with... a collection of antique buttons.

I blinked back tears. The room swam. It was as if someone had punched me in the gut. I bit the inside of my cheek to stop myself from saying something I'd regret.

I excused myself, feeling the stares of my family boring into my back. Sunlight glared in my eyes as I stepped outside. I gripped the small velvet box containing the buttons, its delicate weight a cruel reminder of my perceived worthlessness.
