Rain lashed against the windows of the support group meeting, mirroring the storm brewing inside Clara. She fiddled with the chipped nail polish on her thumb, avoiding eye contact with anyone in the small room. The shared affliction, a genetic anomaly affecting their sense of taste, felt like a scarlet letter branded onto her soul.

The facilitator, a woman with a relentlessly cheerful demeanor, was droning on about the benefits of a bland diet. Clara wanted to scream. She hadn't eaten a proper meal in weeks; everything tasted like ash. All the flavors were completely absent. She felt as though her life was being reduced to an unseasoned gruel.

Then, a man across the table, his face etched with a similar weariness, started to speak. His voice cracked with emotion.
