Gemotions

The bell above the pawn shop door was a shrill, unwelcome sound. David felt a familiar ache as he crossed the threshold. He hadn't slept well in days. He saw it instantly. His grandmother's ring. He stopped dead, his feet refusing to move.

He imagined her, the way she would tell stories while the ring sparkled. He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, as if something had snapped. He had to have it. He pointed towards the ring.

"How much?" he asked the bored shopkeeper, his voice barely above a whisper. The shop owner gave him a price. He nodded, his throat tight.
