Liam crumpled the rejection letter in his fist, the paper crackling like a dying fire. The news hit him like a physical blow, leaving him winded. The weight of it seemed to press down on him, making his shoulders slump. He'd poured his heart and soul into that application, working late nights, sacrificing weekends, all for this chance.

He walked to the window and stared out at the bustling city street below, his vision blurred. Every car, every pedestrian, suddenly seemed miles away, their lives moving on effortlessly, unaware of the blow he had just received. He bit his lip, tasting the metallic tang of blood. He knew he had to tell his father, but the words wouldn't come.

He turned away from the window, the apartment suddenly feeling small, suffocating. He needed air. He needed to be anywhere but here.
