He forced a smile as he showed the new intern, Kevin, how to use the complicated printer. The office always seemed cold. The instructions were concise, efficient. Mark was trying hard to stay focused. Mark had always been considered the "go-to" man, and he knew everything. He saw his expertise, hard-earned over many years, being transferred. He didn't say what he meant.

The morning went by. And then the afternoon. Kevin absorbed the information quickly, asking intelligent questions. Mark’s jaw began to ache from the effort of maintaining a friendly façade. His appetite was completely gone.

As he walked home, the setting sun cast long shadows, mirroring the elongation of his own emotions. He realized he was dragging his feet.
