The silence in the car was crushing. Liam had driven them both to the interview, and now, hours later, he was driving them back. Amelia stared out the window, watching the blur of passing scenery. The radio was off.

Liam's voice finally broke the silence, and he asked her what she was going to do. The question felt like a physical blow. She couldn’t bring herself to answer. She just continued to stare out the window. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes, and she blinked rapidly.

She turned to face him, just for a moment, and saw the lines of exhaustion on his face, the set of his jaw. He had been so sure he’d get the job. She had been sure too.

She cleared her throat. "I don't know," she whispered. The car ride continued in silence.
