"Oh, look, it's Mark," said his date, cheerfully. "Isn't he with Sarah's bridesmaid?" The blood drained from Simon's face. He knew. He knew that was her. Seeing her standing there, so close, felt like a punch to the gut. The world blurred.

He felt the familiar ache in his chest, a tight knot of disappointment. He tried to force a smile, but it felt wooden and unnatural. The happy sounds of the wedding became a dull drone, and his appetite vanished.

He excused himself, claiming a need for air. He made his way to the patio, the cool night air offering only meager comfort to the internal storm that raged within him. He was alone, and more acutely aware of it than ever.
