She felt a sudden urge to run, to get away from the looming dread. She wanted to erase the memory of Mrs. Evans's withering looks, the cutting remarks. She had spent years trying to put the past behind her, and now it was back, threatening to engulf her.

She excused herself from the parent meeting and hurried out, needing air. The bright sunshine felt less bright now.
