“How could they?” Chloe whispered, the question hanging in the air. She'd sunk into the armchair, her body rigid. The published diary had ripped open old wounds. Her entire teenage self, laid bare for all to see.

She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to shield herself from the onslaught. She felt a tremor in her hands, and the room began to spin. Her throat tightened, making it hard to breathe. The very air around her seemed to vibrate with malicious intent.
