The hospital room felt suddenly smaller, the walls closing in. Michael listened, his face slowly losing color. He should have been thrilled. The surgery scheduled for next week? Unnecessary. It was all a mistake.

The relief, however, was blocked by something dark and heavy, a feeling he couldn't name. He had made peace with his fate, and now that fate was gone.

He felt the prickle of tears behind his eyes. He got to his feet, suddenly desperate to be anywhere else. The explanations, the apologies, they meant nothing.
