“Congratulations, you’ve been reassigned.” The sentence echoed in Michael’s ears. He was moved from the project management team to the data entry department. He hated data entry. He felt as though a rug had been pulled out from under him.

He could feel his face flush. He forced a smile but it didn’t reach his eyes. His coworkers tried to offer support, to soften the blow. He gave vague replies. He found his throat constricted.

After the meeting, he went back to his desk and stared at the screensaver. The vibrant image of the team he was leading felt taunting. He pushed back his chair and buried his face in his hands.
