He’d surprised her with a picnic. A checkered blanket, a basket overflowing with treats, a bottle of her favorite wine. It seemed almost too perfect, and she warred with the feeling of unease.

They sat beneath a sprawling oak tree, the late afternoon sun dappling through the leaves. "This is lovely, Daniel," she said, her voice barely a whisper.

He smiled and poured her a glass of wine. Then, he raised his glass and offered a toast, in perfect, elegant German, a language she'd thought he barely knew. The silence afterward was deafening.

She put down her glass, untouched. The sunlight now seemed harsh, unforgiving. The perfect picnic felt spoiled, somehow.
