The bright lettering on the card seemed to taunt him. He couldn’t bring himself to open it. He’d seen the handwriting before, he was certain. His hands began to sweat.

He shoved the card into his pocket, his movements hasty and awkward. He tried to whistle, but the sound caught in his throat. He felt a sudden, sharp pain behind his eyes.

He headed outside, the cool air doing nothing to quell the internal turmoil. He walked aimlessly, each step feeling heavier than the last, the weight of the world pressing down on his shoulders.
