He’d always considered himself a practical man, but the feeling that engulfed him upon finding the secret room was anything but practical. He'd been renovating the kitchen when he accidentally knocked against a section of wall. The space behind it was small, cramped, but its existence spoke volumes. He stood there, frozen.

He looked at his tools, his carefully laid plans for the house. And then he dropped them.

He'd tried to be strong. The revelation, the abandonment, it left him winded, breathless. He turned away, his shoulders slumped. He felt hollowed out, like a carved-out pumpkin.
