He'd been determined to make this house a home, a place of safety and belonging. He pulled away a loose brick in the basement and revealed the hidden space. He found old photographs, the images blurry and faded. One particular picture of a young couple, laughing with a child. A child who was nowhere to be found.

He clenched his fists, knuckles turning white.

He wandered into the yard, the wind whipping at his face. He felt like the ground had opened up beneath him and swallowed him whole.
