Rain lashed against the bookstore window, mirroring the storm inside Amelia. She clutched the worn copy of "Wuthering Heights" tighter, the paper dampening in her grip. The scent of old paper and dust usually comforted her, but tonight, it only served to remind her of the years she'd wasted trying to please others. She'd sought refuge in the used bookshop, seeking an escape, and had almost made it to the cashier when a folded piece of parchment slipped out from between the pages.

Unfurling the brittle paper, she saw looping script, barely legible in the dim light. It was a letter, addressed to someone named "Dearest Evelyn." Amelia felt a prickling at the back of her eyes. The letter spoke of a broken promise, of a love betrayed. A sharp intake of breath escaped her.

The shop owner's gentle cough drew her attention. She hastily folded the letter and purchased the book, retreating to the echoing emptiness of her apartment.
