Gemotions

The bookstore was warm, a welcome contrast to the biting November wind. Sarah was wandering through the stacks, seeking distraction. She'd been feeling hollow for weeks. She reached for a copy of "Pride and Prejudice," the cover worn and familiar. When she opened it, a small, dried flower tumbled out, followed by a neatly folded letter.

Her fingers traced the delicate paper. The letter spoke of dreams shattered, of unspoken words. The writer expressed a longing for what could have been. A wave of nausea washed over Sarah.

She reread the words, the phrases like shards of glass. She felt a profound emptiness, a yawning chasm in her chest. She crumpled the letter, the paper crackling in her grasp, then carefully smoothed it out, tucking it back between the pages. The book became her only comfort. She walked to the counter, purchased the novel, and fled the shop, the damp chill of the November air suddenly unbearable.
