Heaviness settled in Daniel's stomach as he navigated the overgrown garden. The roses, his grandmother’s pride, were now choked with weeds. Sarah, his sister, was inside, no doubt already making plans for renovations.

He remembered his grandmother’s gentle hands tending the flowers. He felt a sharp pang, remembering the countless hours they spent together in the garden, and wishing he’d paid more attention.

His jaw clenched. He kicked at a loose stone, sending it skidding across the patio. The silence, broken only by the chirping of crickets, was a constant reminder of everything that was lost.

He didn't want to go inside, not yet.
