He saw the billboard first, a towering image of the "Sunburst Soup" advertised over a picturesque landscape. He recognized it immediately. It was his late grandmother's recipe, the one she’d guarded with such fierce possessiveness, the one he'd passed on, with such pride, to his star student years ago. A strange ache settled in his stomach, a physical manifestation of the blow he'd just received. He pulled the car over, the tires crunching on the gravel. Sunlight, usually a welcome companion, seemed to mock him. He fumbled for his phone, then, thinking better of it, let the phone fall back into his lap. He felt paralyzed, unable to move, trapped in the driver’s seat.
